Our practices

The receipts,
not the pitch.

Lab grown diamonds are sold on environmental claims more than almost any product in this trade, and most of those claims cannot be checked. We have taken a different approach. Everything on this page is a specific action with a document behind it, and where we do not have the data, we say so.

We are not finished. We review this every year and look for the thing we are not yet doing. If you have suggestions on how we can do better, or practices you think we should be taking on, please tell us.

The commitments

Four things we do.
Each one checkable.

Most of what a lab grown diamond company can honestly claim happens after the carbon exists. That is a smaller territory than the marketing suggests, and it is the territory we actually control. Here is what we do inside it.

"Every one of these is something a buyer can verify. That was the standard we set before we started."
01 Fair pay

Our cutters are paid 50 percent above the market rate in Surat. Not as a gesture, but because precision cutting is skilled work and the people doing it are the reason our stones look the way they do.

Why it holds Our cutters stay. In an industry defined by turnover, the senior hands have been here long enough to have trained the people sitting beside them.
02 Renewable power

In 2026 we measured the power drawn at all three of our locations and matched every megawatt hour with certified renewable generation. Eighty-four megawatt hours of wind and solar, purchased and retired for our operations.

Why it holds Purchased through a certified B Corporation and retired, so that no other party can claim the same generation.
03 One tree per stone

Every Distinctive Cut diamond sold plants a tree in fire damaged California forest through One Tree Planted. Not an offset and not a carbon claim. Reforestation, funded per stone.

Why it holds One Tree Planted is a registered 501(c)(3) and reports its planting sites publicly. The count is tied to orders, not to a budget line.
04 Our mark on the girdle

Every LITHOS stone carries the LITHOS bull laser inscribed on the girdle alongside its IGI report number. We employ our cutters directly and cut in our own facility rather than brokering the work out.

Why it holds A dealer who buys finished goods cannot tell you who cut them or under what conditions. If the mark is on the stone, we can.
Renewable power

Measured first.
Then matched.

We reviewed a full year of power consumption at every location we operate: the cutting facility in Surat, the office in Mumbai, and the headquarters in Los Angeles. In 2026 we purchased and retired 84 megawatt hours of certified solar and wind renewable energy certificates through a certified B Corporation, one of the longest operating renewable energy providers in the United States. Retired for our operations, they cannot be counted by anyone else.

This covers the electricity we draw. It does not cover diamond growth, which happens at partner facilities we do not own or operate. We say more about that below.

"A number you can check is worth more than an adjective you cannot."
84MWh Purchased and retired

Certified wind and solar for the 2026 reporting year, retired for our operations and unavailable to any other party.

100% Of electricity we draw

Across all three locations, for the whole of the 2026 calendar year. Matched against measured consumption, not estimated.

3 Locations covered

The Surat cutting facility, the Mumbai office, and the Los Angeles headquarters. Every place we operate, with nothing left out.

2027 Already committed

We are continuing the program into next year and expect coverage to grow with the business rather than lag behind it.

Fair pay

The people at the bench
are the product.

Surat cuts most of the world's diamonds, and it is an industry built on speed. Work is handed out by the parcel, pay rises and falls with the flow of rough, and cutters move between factories chasing it. That model produces volume. It does not produce a good make.

An Old Mine cut is not a shape you program into a machine. It is a series of judgments made by a person reading a specific piece of rough, and getting it wrong costs more than the time saved. Paying well above the going rate is how we keep people who can make those judgments, at the same benches, year after year.

It is also why we can take on shapes other houses turn away. Volume cutting and precision cutting are two different trades, and only one of them can be bought cheaply.

"Lab rough is plentiful. Skilled hands are not."

50% Above market rate

What our cutters are paid against the going rate for equivalent work in Surat, the city that cuts most of the world's diamonds.

In house Not brokered

We employ our cutters directly rather than subcontracting to third party factories, which is what makes any of this ours to answer for.

Small batch Not by the parcel

Work is scheduled by the shape and the stone rather than by throughput, so a difficult make gets the hours it needs.

One Tree Planted

One Distinctive Cut.
One tree.

Every Distinctive Cut diamond sold plants a tree in fire damaged California forest through One Tree Planted. We chose reforestation because it is a specific, countable action rather than a certificate, and because California is one of the planet's biodiversity hotspots, with more native plant species than any other state.

After a wildfire, invasive species establish quickly in cleared ground and turn diverse forest into low value bushland. Replanting native stock is what gives those ecosystems a chance to come back as forest. That is the work this funds.

We do not present this as a carbon offset and we make no claim that it neutralizes anything. It is reforestation, funded per stone, and the planting is reported by the organization doing it rather than by us.

What we don't claim

The parts we cannot
account for yet.

Almost nobody in this category publishes their limits. We think that is exactly why the claims in it are hard to trust. Here is what we do not know, and what we are not going to tell you until we do.

Growth energy

We purchase premium lab rough on the open market from trusted vendors. Growing that carbon is energy intensive and it happens over weeks in facilities we do not own or operate. Our renewable coverage applies to the electricity we draw, not to growth. Any company telling you their finished lab diamond is carbon neutral should be asked how they account for that stage.

Lifecycle comparison

We do not publish a comparison between our stones and mined diamonds, because we have not commissioned a lifecycle assessment and we are not going to repeat someone else's. When we have a study we can stand behind, it will appear here with the methodology attached.

Freight and travel

Stones move between Surat, Mumbai and Los Angeles, and we attend trade shows. None of that is currently measured. It is on the list, and measuring it comes before claiming anything about it.

Verification

Every claim here
has a document behind it.

Nothing on this page rests on our word alone. Each commitment is backed by certification or reporting from an independent body, and we are glad to walk any customer or trade partner through the detail.

Renewable energy

Certified solar and wind renewable energy certificates, retired for our operations for the 2026 reporting year.

Supplier standing

Purchased through a certified B Corporation, among the longest operating renewable energy providers in the United States.

Reforestation

One Tree Planted, a registered 501(c)(3), with planting counts tied to Distinctive Cut orders and sites reported publicly.

Certification

IGI grading report on every stone, with the report number and the LITHOS bull laser inscribed on the girdle.

Sourcing for a client who asks these questions?

The trade is increasingly being asked to answer for how a stone was made and who handled it. We would rather give you documentation you can forward than assurances you have to repeat. Trade accounts are open, and we are happy to go further into any of this than the page does.
